Strathspey Works was formed as a Community Association on 14th June 2018 following two years of planning and discussion with interested parties. In April 2020 we received our registration as a charity.
We live in a consumer society where items are disposed of and replaced rather than repaired and recycled for use. Landfill space is running out, items disposed of are ruining the environment whether through fly tipping or legitimate disposal, we are poisoning the ground that we rely upon to maintain food supplies. The whole population has a responsibility to care for that environment.
Our methodology is to repair and recycle for use, to teach repair skills and to work with the community to enable this to happen. As part of this process we will enable individuals to learn skills which will move them closer to the workplace.
Strathspey Works Pilot Project will run support services for Young People in difficulty with transition from school to work or further education and ultimately will also run services for Adults with Learning Disabilities or suffering from Mental Ill-Health.
These services will enable individuals to develop their employability skills, confidence, develop practical skills and experience supported work placements.
This skill development will move individuals closer to the employability pipeline and where possible into employment which may lead to further learning through access to apprenticeship.
Practical skill development and advice will be offered through the partnership with volunteers and skilled local tradespeople. This skill development will be based upon the refurbishment and repair of items such as furniture, etc. which will then be offered for sale back to the local community in order to lead to the enterprise becoming self-sustaining.
In order to ensure that the service provided to individuals meets their needs and aspirations the enterprise will adopt the 5 Stage approach to Supported Employment which, whilst not being unique has been designed to be flexible and practical, and offers the highest degree of support for the candidate with ongoing additional support for employers.
When approaching School Leaving age individuals will where appropriate be offered Employability Skills Courses by Barnardos at levels 2 and 3 in line with their expressed wishes and ambitions.
Our Legacy will be Developing Skills and Protecting the Environment
